π Update: Florida's Response to My Complaint.π¨
Florida's Laws & Fast Food Therapy Culture Fails Detransitioners ππ«"
π Welcome to McTherapy! Home of the Affirming TherapyβWould You Like to Place an Order? π
Because of my lived experiences and hearing from others who have faced similar situations in the state, Im here to state that Florida is more than just a hotbed of "have-it-your-way" medical care. When it comes to therapy, itβs glaringly obvious that this is a βMcTherapyβ issueβlike fast food where anyone can essentially order a transition with a side of affirmation. Worst of all, the stateβs laws appear to support and reinforce this culture.
After gathering the courage to file a formal complaint against the therapist who fast-tracked my transition, I received a reply from the Florida Department of Health. I had hoped their response would bring some sense of validation for the harm I endured.
Instead, it left me feeling even more frustrated, as it completely ignored the severity of my concerns. Itβs hard not to feel disheartened when the very systems meant to protect us fail to take meaningful action and in effect silence us. Here's what the Florida Board of Health sent me:
Essentially the same statue of limitations that prevents me from taking legal action also prevents me from simply making a complaint in the state of Florida. As they put it Florida law is prohibited from proceeding with an investigation.
Because⦠Section 456.073(10) of the Florida Statutes specifies that complaints against healthcare professionals in Florida must generally be filed within six years from the date of the alleged incident or treatment. If a complaint is submitted after this six-year timeframe, the Florida Department of Health is legally prohibited from initiating an investigation. WHY?
Reading this reply was infuriating, to say the least. The polite veneer of bureaucratic language couldnβt hide the harsh truth: the system is not designed to hear detransitioners. Instead, it erects yet another barrier that silence those trying to speak out and share truths that could prevent others from enduring similar suffering.
To me it is beyond ignorant to suggest for one moment that somehow this βtherapistβ stopped using an affirmation only approach after me.
Not only does their refusal to investigate, highlight a huge fracture in the system. It leaves a bitter aftertaste to see phrases like βTo protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Floridaβ when my own Florida McTherapy experience proves otherwise.
Where Was This Protection? π€
Where was this protection when my self IDβed trans Identity was affirmed by a therapist within two one hour sessions?
Where was this protection when I was funneled into life-altering medical procedures without adequate evaluation or care?
Where was this protection when I was approved for facial surgery only 2 months after starting hormones?
Where was this protection I was approved for and had breast augmentation only eight months into my transition?
Where was this protection when I ultimately lost my livelihood and business in Florida because of views surrounding the trans experience I was not prepared for?
Where was this protection when my arm was broken and I became a domestic violence victim rendered unfit to work and having to rely on a system and abuser.
These things and more are all a result of a domino effect because of a diagnosis and letter of recommendation for one misguided therapist.
So I ask where is the protection for someone who is suffering from trauma, who is misguided and in a deep state of dissociation? When you realized years later, where is the protection?
This response, and the state's lack of accountability, makes it feel as though the statute of limitations is yet another tool used to silence those of us who speak out. It also clouds any ability to record actual numbers of incidents and further underlines a deep sense of regret to an already traumatized person.
Beyond the departmentβs misleading mission statement, the most disturbing part is seeing Governor Ron DeSantisβs name at the top of the letterhead. For years, heβs led an all-out "woke" witch hunt in Florida, frequently making statements like βwoke needs to dieβ while positioning himself as a hero for the people.
But when I, like so many others, am silenced by what seems to be a lazy law at best, I canβt help but ask: is he even aware of whatβs happening in his own state? Because honestly, while he may not be βwoke,β Iβm not convinced heβs as awake as he claims to be.
Reflections and Moving Forward π€οΈ
Though Floridaβs reply was a setback, it doesnβt diminish the importance of filing the complaint in the first place. I may not have yet received the outcome Iβd hoped for, but going through the motions still mattered. Thereβs something psychologically empowering about standing up for yourself, even when the system tries to dismiss you.
Sharing our storiesβeven when the system refuses to listenβis how we begin to create change.
With the understanding that this therapist is one of many who have impacted countless people in this way, I know others are out there in similar situations. So I ask: what do you think my next step should be? Iβd love to hear your ideas in the comments.
If youβre a detransitioner considering filing a complaint, donβt let my experience deter you. The process is still worth it, if only for the catharsis of standing up and demanding better for yourself and others.
I hope my story will shine a light on the flaws in the system and inspire others to raise their voices, pushing for reform. Together, we can demand a higher standard of care and hold professionals accountable for the harm they cause.
The medical system is a shambles over βgender careβ. And our legal system has not caught up in trying to correct it. Please donβt give up - contact every representative you have at every level, local, state, federal and tell them your story and what you think needs to be done. Your voice in this needs to be recognized and respected. Nothing is going to be able to change the past and how you (and my own son and so many others) have been betrayed and mistreated by a medical system that has gone over the cliff following gender ideology, but your voice may save future victims from this travesty. It may mean nothing in any legal sense, but I will raise my voice to say you were mistreated and you deserved better.
Florida law is an oxymoron, like winning in Vegas.
